Let’s get physical! Here’s how

Are you new to exercise? Figuring out where to start is often the most difficult part when beginning anything new. When starting something new, like an exercise routine, it’s important to take the stress out of the equation. To do that, I have a list of ways for you to accomplish a routine beginning to end. There are many different ways to exercise which can be overwhelming if it’s new to you or you are trying to begin again. There’s no better time to start than right now. Let’s make this exercise goal obtainable for you to improve your overall health!

Here are some immediate and long-term benefits of including exercise in your lifestyle to improve your overall health:

  • Improves quality of sleep

  • Reduces the feelings of anxiety and stress

  • Reduces blood pressure

  • Reduces risk of depression and developing dementia

  • Aids in maintaining a healthy weight

  • Lowers risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes

  • Improves bone health

Take the stress out:

  • First things first is to make this stress-free. If you are concerned about getting a gym membership, then I have an alternative option for you. Working out at home and enjoying your neighborhood or a local track is the way to go. These options are free and don’t rely on anyone’s time schedule except your own! The fresh air when exercising outside gives you more oxygen to clear your lungs and mind. The sunshine provides vitamin D important for our immune system

  • Buying a gym membership gives you a lot of variety and can give you a designated place to go. Having that location to travel to can give you a purpose which might relieve some stress! A gym offers a variety of machines to use which provides you options to try something new and exciting.

Make it easy:

  • Starting with something minimal like stretching or walking is a perfect way to begin your exercise journey. Adding one of these into your schedule 3 times a week is a great place to start.

Keep it consistent but allow flexibility – physically and in your calendar:

  • Planning ahead will give your goals stability and a chance for you to complete them. Whether you are writing your goals down on a calendar or typing them into your phone, it will prompt you to get going! Each day of our lives can be different, we can’t predict everything. It’s important to provide yourself with consistency but allow for flexibility.

Change lifestyle:

  • Making a lifestyle change is the biggest way to improve your health. Incorporating exercise in conjunction with healthy eating is a recipe for ultimate health and wellbeing.

There are so many different types of exercise! These should provide you with some inspiration:

Free ways to exercise

  • At home
    • Stretching routines
      • Reaching for your toes, bending at your waist
      • Reaching for the stars and then leaning over side to side
      • Stretching wrists and ankles – moving them in circular motions
      • Neck stretches
    • Body weight exercises

        • Push-ups
        • Lunges
        • Bicep curls using canned vegetables
    • Dancing!
      • Pick an album you love to get you moving around the house – this is fun and easy!
  • Outside
    • Walking (or jogging) around your neighborhood
    • Finding a school near by and taking 4 laps around the track will get a mile under your belt

Including exercise into your lifestyle will give you great immediate and long-term benefits. You will find that your stress levels decrease as you continue your new exercise routine. Finding ways to manage your stress is beneficial for your overall health. So keeping your workout routine simple will help manage the worry about starting a regimen.
